Who we are & what we do

Leeds Aerial Arts is owned and managed by Lorna Mackinder, who studied aerial technique at University. We offer classes, workshops and sessions in aerial arts and fitness for you to develop your core strength, work on your artistic technique and creative flair.

We run classes in aerial hoop, silks, yoga & sling, all taught by our dedicated and fabulous team of instructors. If you are looking for a new way to exercise, or a new way of expressing yourself, aerial arts are definitely something you should try!

Our story so far…

By Lorna Mackinder-Clark, founder & studio director of Leeds Aerial Arts

“When I moved back to Leeds I wanted to share this newfound feeling with women just like me. In 2013 I was awarded a ‘Kickstart’ Bursary of £500 from Yorkshire Dance to begin to put my plans into action. The Leeds fitness scene was exploding at the time, but I saw classes with a focus on body image, burning calories & losing weight… this wasn’t my message. I wanted to start a class with strength AND confidence building at its core. I wanted to meet women who were looking for a different type of exercise, a class which was fun, challenging, and for that hour of the week, they were thinking only about the taking on the equipment in front of them. Leaving the outside world outside of the room.

Lorna Mackinder-Clark

Studio Owner & Aerial Fitness Instructor

Leeds Aerial Arts was established in 2013 by Lorna Mackinder.

“Hi, I am Lorna and I am the founder of Leeds Aerial Arts. I can mostly be found hanging upside down, either in the Yoga Hammocks or Aerial Hoops!

I have been teaching for the past 7 years and hold a BA in Dance with Aerial Performance and MA in Dance Education. Outside of the Studio I teach workshops and classes across the region. I am also a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance, my dance background is a key influence for my classes and I like to create smooth transitions and clever combos which challenge my clients stamina, co-ordination and courage!

Outside of the studio I can be found out walking with my Welsh Terrier, Walter, and over sharing pictures of him on Instagram.”

Maisie Kingstead

Aerial Fitness Instructor

“Hi, i’m Maisie!

Unlike a lot of aerialists I don’t have a background in dance or gymnastics, but as soon as I started aerial I knew that it was the sport for me and dove straight in. I joined the Leeds Aerial Arts team in 2018 after completing my instructor training whilst attending Lorna’s classes at Vertical Fitness at the University of Leeds.  Outside of classes you can find me hanging off a climbing wall, surfing or swimming in the great outdoors!

I love to fill my classes with weird and wonderful shapes, and moves and transitions that make you feel strong.

I teach most evenings and kids classes on Sundays, I hope to see you around!”

Kathryn Spence

Gaby Cooke
